Admission to High School

The first year High School students are selected through the national joint application, the “yhteishaku”, and each applicant also takes The English School entrance exam in May.

Admission to The English School is based on academic merit, with special consideration of applicants with excellent English language skills.  Please note that a good command of the Finnish language is also needed because some of the courses are studied in Finnish, and the students will take the Finnish Matriculation Examinations as their final examinations.

In the entrance exam we will give you a written test in the English and Finnish language (Finnish as a second language, if you are a foreigner), and you will be interviewed, too.  Maximum score in the entrance exam is 10 points, and we will send the results of the tests to the Provincial Government, the yhteishaku”, where the average of the study subjects in your final report card will be added to the test score.

How to apply:

• Place us as number one in "yhteisvalintalomake".
• Print out our HS Application Form (pdf) and fill it out. Students applying from finnish schools, please use the finnish form hakulomake
• Your Guidance Counselor must send The English School Application Form to us by March 23, 2009. Students applying from abroad also have to submit a transcript of their latest report card with the application form and recommendations.
• We will call you for the entrance test in the end of April.

Admission from Abroad

Students applying from abroad also need to participate in the national joint application (yhteishaku) in order to have themselves listed on the official selection list. The application time is 2.-20.3.2009 and the form can be found at www.haenyt.fi during the application time (at the moment only in Finnish or in Swedish).

Each applicant also takes The English School entrance exam in May. Normally the school counselor or other school official in your present school would give this exam.  In the event that your school is unable to serve in this capacity, we suggest that you contact the Finnish Embassy consulate closest to you to arrange a test time, venue, and proctor.  We would ask that you advise us at your earliest convenience of the name and title of the person and the fax number of his or her institution which will be administering the exam.
